Hearing & Health: An Opportunity for Integrated Management

Hearing loss is often perceived as a benign consequence of aging and a barrier to effective communication. However, poor communication results in a variety of adverse outcomes including reduced patient treatment adherence and suboptimal use of health services. Hearing loss is also associated with certain chronic medical conditions and likely mediated through vascular, neurologic, genetic and behavioral pathways.
This session will examine the mechanism through which untreated communication barriers adversely impact healthcare outcomes and review the known physiologic links between hearing loss and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and delirium. We will suggest opportunities that audiologists and hearing professionals may pursue to expand their impact and contribute to the improvement of overall health for the millions of adults with hearing loss.
